Maybelline Superstay 24hr Liquid Foundation review

Maybelline Superstar 24h Liquid Foundation review

It’s safe to say that I’ve tried my fair share of foundations since my battle with hormonal acne began and stumbled upon some good and very bad choices along the way. Recently (for the past six months), I’ve been putting the Maybelline Superstar 24h Foundation to the test.

Available at full price for just under £10 in most highstreet stores (e.g. Boots and Superdrug), plus supermarkets and online e-retailers, this affordable choice is acclaimed to be a suitable option for all skin types, largely due to the fact that the consistency is oil-free.

Here’s everything you need to know before trying it for yourself…

Coverage and consistency

First off, I just wanted to point out that the coverage provided by this Maybelline Foundation isn’t going to blow your mind… but it’s also not going to underwhelm you. I’d describe it as medium-full matte coverage, with the need to go in and spot conceal after if you have blemish prone skin (like me).

The consistency is oil-free, as previously mentioned, so is ideal for those with oily skin as it won’t contribute to how clogged the pores become. It also feels reasonably lightweight when applied, but is also buildable, so you can produce either a subtle or full coverage look dependant on the occasion and your personal preference.

Personally, I like to team the foundation with a thick concealer, either Shape Tape by Tarte or Makeup Revolution’s Shape & Define Concealer, and spot conceal further using a small detail brush and touch of powder foundation (a compact). Then, I bake the skin using the Laura Mercier Loose Translucent Powder, which helps to avoid creasing in the smile lines.

A foundations ability to sink into the pores without sitting on-top of the skin and producing creasing in the suspect areas is one of the most important factors I usually consider, and thankfully, when combined with a good setting powder, this foundation does not crease. Which is every oily skinned girls dream.

Shade range

Maybelline Superstar 24hr FoundationI’m pretty sure that everyone on the planet is aware of the various brand foundation shade scandals which have taken place since the initial Tarte Foundation reveal, but I think the choice of Maybelline shades is still fairly mediocre when you consider what some of the cheaper competitors are offering.

Don’t get me wrong, my foundation match (the palest shade) is perfect, as it’s light enough to match my pasty winter complexion with a slight yellow tone to cancel out my pigmentation, but when I looked on the website, I could only see one really deep shade (Cocoa) and a few deeper medium tones.

With 18 shades in total, you would hope that the options would be a little more spread out, but perhaps the colour options look deeper in person… so that’s definitely something to consider if this foundation is an option for you.

Worth the money?

I would say yes, especially if you have a naturally oily skin type.

I’ve tried a number of high-end alternatives who have comparable selling points, and even those options haven’t provided me with the amount of coverage and blendability that the Maybelline Superstar 24hr Foundation has.

For £10, it’s really worth a shot… but definitely keep your eyes open for an offer, as this beauty is always discounted in at least one store/website at a time (we love a good bargain).
